Sherlock is borrowing a page from fellow BBC favorite Doctor Who by going back in time!
Showrunner Steven Moffat confirmed in an interview at SXSW that an upcoming Sherlock special will be set in Victorian London, the original 19th-century setting for Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective stories.
“The special is its own thing. We wouldn’t have done the story we’re doing, and the way we’re doing it, if we didn’t have this special,” said Moffat. “It’s not part of the run of three episodes…as we could hardly conceal—it’s Victorian.”
According to Moffat, series co-creator and star Mark Gatiss was one of the driving forces behind this special, as he worked on the idea with Moffat directly. But those wondering if this will mark a shift towards the supernatural for the series, no worries. “It had to be a separate entity on its own,” Moffat said. “It’s kind of in its own little bubble.”
While the special has no official premiere date, I can’t pretend I’m not looking forward to it, especially since I just picked up The Complete Sherlock Holmes, and have basically been picturing Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman in this exact setting while reading. I can’t wait to see what the show does in a period setting.
