Matt Smith’s ‘Doctor Who’ replacement could be announced next month via Rickey.org

The new Doctor could be stepping through the doors of the TARDIS as early as next month, according to several sources within the BBC.
Following the announcement that Matt Smith would be leaving Doctor Who at the end of 2013, fans have begun feverishly speculating on who would inherit the role of The Doctor, with suggestions ranging from Idris Elba to Rupert Grint. Other names floated by the Who community include Jack Davenport, Ben Whishaw, Hugh Laurie and Sherlock stars Martin Freeman and Benedict Cumberbatch. So basically every working male British actor in the business today.
“The search has begun in earnest and is active now,” said one source, adding that the BBC has not ruled out hiring a woman to replace Matt Smith.
The decision will be made by a small team of BBC executives, including showrunner Steven Moffat, Danny Cohen, BBC’s new head of television, casting director Andy Pryor, the show’s incoming executive producer Brian Minchin, and controller of drama commissioning Ben Stephenson. No matter which direction BBC decides to go, sources report that the replacement needs to be announced before the Doctor Who Christmas special begins filming next month, since The Twelfth Doctor is expected to first appear on screen at the end of the special, following the regeneration of Smith’s Eleventh Doctor.
The set is likely to go into lockdown during the filming of the special, but it would be pretty much impossible to keep the new Doctor’s identity under wraps; thus, sources expect that BBC will make an official announcement themselves, once the new Doctor has been cast.
