Season three of BBC’s critically-acclaimed, hit series ‘Sherlock’ is set to begin filming next Monday, with three new installments slated to begin airing on BBC One this winter, but that wasn’t the big news coming out of star Benedict Cumberbatch’s interview with RadioTimes. The star discussed his and co-star Martin Freeman’s contract status, in news that should thrill fans of the venerable BBC drama:

“We’ve agreed to two more series but I could get into trouble for saying that. All I know at the moment is I’m doing these three [episodes of the upcoming series] and another three.”

Cumberbatch would go on to say that he’d love to see the show continue past season four. However, any continuation past a fourth season would depend largely on the schedules of the increasingly busy actors, in addition to showrunner Steven Moffat, who is also busy with ‘Doctor Who.’ Each three episode season runs 90-minutes per episode, and the feature film nature of the series makes it arduous to produce. While filming for two of the episodes begins next week, shooting is likely to continue into the summer, at which point the actors will take a break before returning later in 2013 to film the remaining episode. Martin Freeman is busy with extensive reshoots for the next installments of Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit trilogy. Benedict Cumberbatch’s profile has been rising as well. In addition to his recent starring role in hit BBC miniseries Parade’s End, he can be seen as the villain of JJ Abrams’ upcoming summer blockbuster Star Trek Into Darkness.
